After Newtown, NRA Ready to Make 'Meaningful Contributions'
Fairfax-headquartered group issues statement about preventing future tragedies after shooting that killed 28, including the gunman, in Connecticut.
After days of silence, the National Rifle Association, headquartered in Fairfax, has released a statement on the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn., saying it will make "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."
In the release, the organization begins to explain its silence, saying: "Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting."
Critics had called out the group in the days following the shooting: As citizens and legislators began to fall on either side of a debate about what, if at all, should be done about gun laws, many wondered why the group was absent from the conversation.
Patch submitted a media request with the NRA, which also houses its National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, and has yet to receive comment. The organization released its statement Tuesday to the press.
The organization announced it will hold a press conference Friday in Washington, D.C.
More details on Friday's press conference will be released when timing is deemed "appropriate," according to the statement.
The statement comes after both President Barack Obama and Virginia Sen. Mark Warner said they want to tighten gun laws in light of Friday's shootings.
"Enough is enough," said Warner, who has an "A" rating from the NRA.
“I‘ve been a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights,” the Democrat from Alexandria said Monday outside the Virginia Capitol, where he was attending an unrelated meeting, The Washington Post reported Monday.
“But the status quo isn’t acceptable," he continued, as reported by the Post. "There’s got to be a way to put reasonable restrictions, particularly as we look at assault weapons, as we look at these fast clips of ammunition.”

WOW St. Louis County Police Department! I had no idea there is Safe Schools Partnership of St. Louis County launched during the 1998-1999 school year. This has got to be the most responsible action taken yet in our country. Your department is more than up to speed. Thank you for your service to our communities.
I feel that it would be important to consider including a behavioral psychiatrist or more to help disseminate what is important and what is not at your meeting. Would you consider teaching the schools staff and community of what to be aware of and what to look for in characteristics of suicidal, depressed or manic behavior. I would think that perhaps arranging rescue drills including local medical services physicians and other support groups, as well as, citizens who could be instrumental - especially your senior citizen population to help in a crisis.
Frankly, I do not believe going after guns or assault rifles is the answer. Most guns used in these gun massacres were obtained legally. I value our 2nd amendment rights and do not wish to see controversial legislation attacking the gun or all the responsible citizens that own a gun for protection even when out in the community with a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
Perhaps it is time to hold responsible drug manufacturers and psychiatrist to a more rigid standard in prescribing psychiatric medications with criminal responsibility or negligence in the use and treatment of mind altering drugs.

Im sorry, but why is Ford and Jack Daniels so quiet after all the deaths caused by drunk driving? They caused the deaths and should have to stop selling cars and liquor.
THAT would make more sense since the NRA doesnt make guns or ammo, and there are more deaths due to drunk driving than guns.
Second ammendment is there to protect us from
A tyrannical government. Take away our guns, and you take away our ability to defend our homes from a force that could take over the government from within. Second
Ammendment is NOT for hunting. It is for self defense. Just think if the founding fathers had given up THEIR weapons, and thwn stood up to a corrupt government trampling their rights!

It is a sad and heart breaking thing that happened to school children and teachers. I am a former solider teacher police officer and gun owner. The young man that did such a thing has affected us all. We have laws to prevent such things but those laws are for law abiding citizen

It will take years for the change to take place. Politics suck, too bad it takes a mass killing like that for some idiots to realize that there is a problem. It's sad to read all these useless news.

Its not the number of rounds in the weapon its the state of mind of the person pulling the trigger. Charlie.

Sen. Warner, Could you please tell me what a "fast clip of ammunition" is? You loose a lot of credibility when you speak gobble-d-gook about something that you clearly do not know much about.

what's next....we ban ice picks because my friend was stabbed with one by a homeless and deranged idiot while simply walking down the street (true story)? Give me a break...I tried to have a very psychotic employee forced to seek mental evaluation and get help and was blocked on EVERY front. The state psychologist KNEW this nut and PERSONALLY TOLD ME that he felt the man is very dangerous but that he could not force him to continue taking his prescription meds for psychosis. The Chief of Police, personal friend of mine, told me that they could not take action until AND I QUOTE..."an act has been or is being performed. Get a gun to protect yourself and your employees or GET RID OF HIM. I cannot get there quick enough to stop him when he snaps." Of course, I sent him packing and the crazy nut is still working and interacting with the public in California. You will see this crack pot in the news, I Guarantee It!! His initials are Mel.Jal. It IS NOT THE GUNS PEOPLE!!! Our laws are set to protect every individual persons rights. Nobody is willing to go down the road to have every claim of lunacy investigated so NO claim of lunacy is investigated. The Chief told me that if he were to investigate every claim then it would become akin to a witch hunt with all sorts of false claims and nobody is willing to allow that so we all live with psychotic, partially deranged, hardly lucid individuals milling about among us. Get the Adam Lanza personas out of our midst. ENOUGH.

As a responsible gun owner I am responsible to make sure my weapons are secured at all times. I do not agree with restricting citizens who follow the from being restricted from carrying concealed weapons after background checks and over thirty years of weapons training. I wish I lived in a country where we were all safe but that is not possible. That young man and whoever owned or allowed him access to the weapons must be held accountable. This another reason why you have to be twenty one for most adult privileges in this country.

First off, I am sick of people talking about ban on guns is not fair to law abiding citizens. Nut cases are law abiding citizens too. Otherwise they wouldn't be free. Every massacre we witness in the past decade was done by "Law Abiding Citizens". How do you draw the line ? The 2nd amendment was written during a time when you had to have excellent marksmanship to even survive a fist fight. Now days any fool can kill a crowed of people. I am also sick of the Guns don't kill people quote. That quote is starting to render as useless to me.

First and foremost let us be reminded that a psychotic person knows right from wrong. He or she may be delusional and paranoid but in the mist of all the mental disorder is sanity calling out for help. The school shooting was premedated and planned. So there was some sanity in the mist of a derranged mind.

Mr. Gordon I hear and understand you. Tell me what you will do to protect me or, my family while the police are busy writing traffic tickets. As a combat veteran I still have a right to protect myself and family. I do not take this privilege lightly. I will always stand up for what's right even if some disagree. With every privilege comes responsibility. I do not fly because people blew up planes so I drive. It still doesn't make it right. Conduct unbiased research and then comment. How many sex offenders live in our neighborhoods.

Fast clips of ammunition? Ah yet another informed person. First of all assault rifles feed from magazines not clips. Anyone who knows anything about guns knows that and knows that the difference is important. Second, anyone who has done their homework knows that the difference in the amount of time it takes to fire 30 rounds from 3 ten round magazines vs. firing 30 rounds from a single 30 round magazine is about 6-7 seconds depending on the method and shooter skill. Given the average police response times and the fact that they don't just arrive and engage, the impact on the number of rounds your shooter will put out is going to be almost nothing. This is simple math.
The NRA being involved in the solution is actually a huge step as we are far more likely to get something functional that will actually help instead of pointless crap like the '94 AW ban which managed to have zero impact over the course of its 10 year run.

@Kenneth, don't get me wrong. I am not against banning the guns completely. But the more guns go into circulations, the odds of someone crazy having a bigger and badder gun then you increases. Guns have assembly parts which can be replaced so their deterioration can endure longer then other products. Maybe in order to yeild a gun, you have to be a NRA member. So the NRA can invest money in their crazy law abiding citizens instead of raising money for power and lobbying. Maybe there should be different classes of gun wielder. based on mental conditions and good history and even that doesn't seem right. I dont know. but it cant remain the same. If we didnt circulating high powered weapons, maybe a pistol is all you need to protect yourself. but now days, even that might not be enough.

Germany has one of the strictest gun ownership laws in the world, yet that did not stop two school massacres, in 2002 and 2009. After the U.S. assault weapons ban lapsed in 2004, the Urban Institute conducted a study and found that the ban had zero effect -- zero -- on reducing gun violence. There are plenty of studies empirically demonstrating that the safest communities have the highest rates of gun ownership. Let's be honest -- this talk about new gun control laws might be cathartic in the wake of this atrocity, but such laws will have no impact other than limiting the rights of law-abiding citizens. I don't think it's a good idea to limit our rights for no effect.
