Civil War Day Takes Center Stage in Falls Church

Five signs along the Civil War Trail will be dedicated during the celebration.

The rich history of Falls Church will be on display Saturday during the annual Civil War Day at the Cherry Hill Farmhouse.

Civilian and military re-enactors will be on hand acting out life in Falls Church in 1863. Diane Morse, director for Cherry Hill, said they will also unveil five signs along the Civil War Trail that will give information about what happened at the locations during the Civil War at each stop.

Congressman Jim Moran (D-8th District) will help dedicate the signs during the ceremony.

“We got a grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation to help pay for some of the project,” Morse said of the $13,000 project to install the signs. “The rest of the money came from public donations.”

The celebration will go from 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. at the historic farmhouse. A free bus tour will take attendees to the different Civil War markers throughout the city. Buses will leave at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. A soldier firing and drill exercise will take place along with live music, a children’s activity tent and an Emancipation Proclamation presentation will take place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Box lunches consisting of chicken, coleslaw, corn bread, ginger cake and lemonade will be available for $8.00 each.
