Falls Church Voters Hit the Polls for the Virginia Primaries

Voters can only vote in the Republican Senate or Democratic Congress primary.

Congressman Jim Moran wants to spend at least two more years in office.

Incumbent Moran (D) is running against Bruce Shuttleworth to represent the 8th Congressional District in the November general election.

"I do feel vey much invested in the community and I'll have to be convinced there is somebody in the running with my sense of values and vision,” Moran said. “I can't turn it over to someone who doesn't have proven involvement in the community. That's the test, really."

More than 150 turned out at the three voting districts in the City of Falls Church Tuesday morning. More than 66 absentee ballots were sent out with nine received by Tuesday morning, said David Bjerke, general registrar for the City of Falls Church. Jamie L. Radtke, George Allen, Bob Marshall and E.W. Jackson are vying for the Republican nomination in the commonwealth’s Senate race against Democratic incumbent Tim Kaine. Polls close at 7 p.m.

City resident Dan Hennenberg voted in the Democratic primary but not for the incumbent. Hennenberg said he couldn’t vote for Moran for one major reason.

“He spends too much,” Hennenberg said.

Just past 6 a.m., Bruce Shuttleworth was one of the first voters to cast a ballot in the Democratic primary at the Madison Community Center precinct in North Arlington on Tuesday. Shuttleworth, an Arlington resident, is running against Rep. Jim Moran, 8th District, to represent Northern Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives. He said he is ready for a general election campaign.

"We'd be completely energized for that," Shuttleworth said. "I'm up for that challenge."
