Before he signed three bills on May 31 that will penalize people found to be involved in human trafficking in Virginia, Gov. Bob McDonnell was in Falls Church at a luncheon promoting development in the area. The governor wasn’t the only high profiled person who rolled into town last week. Rap group Bone Thugs N Harmony played the State Theatre as their tour passed through Falls Church. Local runners Monica Boland and Aaron Alford are still chronicling their training for a marathon. Last week was full of triumph, fun and history in Falls Church. Both the boys and girl’s basketball teams at George Mason High advanced to the Virginia High School League Region B Tournament Wednesday evening at home and won each team won their respective tournament championships over the weekend. Both teams will begin playing for state championships this week. The City of Falls Church was also visited by famed Tuskegee Airman Col (retired) Charles McGee Friday afternoon. Fairfax County Police announced last week that they are investigating a robbery that happened at the Steven’s Shop o Feb. 7. Allegedly more than $40,000 in cash was stolen according to the storeowner. The three men, at least one armed with a handgun, are still on the lam. The previous week was big for George Mason and George Marshall high schools. For Mason, there were big wins on the basketball court and an even bigger win for a student artist. At Marshall, the week included a student film festival and a third place win for the school’s “It’s Academic” team. Four City of Falls Church restaurants opened their doors for Restaurant Week and by doing so, brought in new customers. The week-long celebration culminated Sunday. For about a month, the City of Falls Church has been trying out red light cameras at two intersections of the city and come Jan. 18, motorists will begin receiving fines for running red lights. Fines will start at $50.   Marshall High lost a close game Friday night at home to Jefferson. The Statesmen fell to 0-6 in the conference and 2-12 on the season.   Creative Cauldron at ArtSpace kicked off their Passport to the World series Friday night in Falls Church. Fairfax County Pubic Schools were busy last week making announcements about new partnerships and a proposed budget. Here are some of the other things that were going on in and around Falls Church.   Michael Jackson may be gone, but The State Theatre is making sure he is not forgotten. The venue hosted the third dance party honoring the late “King of Pop” since last year. With Christmas having just passed at the beginning of the week and New Years Eve on the horizon, the people of Falls Church were in the mood to celebrate. The Annual Watch Night brought thousands of people to downtown Falls Church City for a fun-filled, family oriented celebration. The celebration was marked by live music, games for children and a special flash mob dance performed by the George Mason High School dance team.
