I Have a Frozen Dairy Bar Addiction

Elizabeth Seeger is a sophomore in the School of Communication at American University.

I can’t stop thinking about Ginger Snap.

A mixture of ginger frozen custard and ginger snap cookies, it is melt-in-your-mouth good. I made the pint I bought last for almost a month, a miraculous period of time for an ice cream lover like me. If only I’d had the foresight to snag a quart.

The frozen custard at is, in a word, irresistible. The little store’s website claims that an unknown food critic once said that a frozen custard stand is “where God gets His ice cream.” As a frozen custard fan, this statement seems pretty close to the truth. Made with higher butterfat content, a slower production time, and less air mixed in, the semi-frozen treat is richer, creamier and softer than ice cream. Frozen Dairy Bar serves up several flavors of custard at a time from basic vanilla and chocolate to its flavor of the day, which is where the joy really starts. Ranging from “Peanut Butter Fudge Pie” to “Mango” to “Dulce de Leche,” these flavors not only incorporate numerous mix-ins but also innovative custard flavors. Each month FDB puts out a calendar of flavors, each of which is offered for one to three days at a time. Repeats are rare, so if you want to try a particular flavor, you’d better keep an eye on the date.

What’s unique about this little store is that if you love one of its varieties enough, you can take it home with you. Pint, quart, multiple pints or quarts, you name it, you can have the premium frozen custard experience at home. While it’s somewhat pricey, at $6 a pint and $8.95 a quart, the quality is bar none better than anything you’ll find in a grocery store. As an ice cream aficionado, I’m willing to make the trade-off. I’ll eat less ice cream (well, frozen custard in this case), but enjoy it more when I do eat it. If you love ice cream as much as I do, you’ll love this place.

Oh, and if you can’t make it to their store, they also deliver.  Even Ben & Jerry’s can’t do that.
