LWVFC Assisted GMHS Seniors With Voter Registration

Members of the League of Women Voters of Falls Church and members of the George Mason High School Student Council worked together April 30 to help more than 35 GMHS seniors register to vote for the first time.

All of the registrations were done electronically via the Internet on laptop computers supplied by the high school. The project started with three computers, but three more had to be added to accommodate the demand. Participating students were required to produce their driver’s license number and their Social Security number. Within 30 days, each should receive a voter’s card, authorizing them to vote and detailing the location of their polling place.

“We were so pleased with the student response,” said Genie Flahie, voter services chair for the LWVFC. “It was gratifying to see how excited these young adults are about exercising their right and responsibility to vote.”

The next scheduled election in Falls Church will be June 10, when the Democratic Party holds a primary to pick its candidate to run in November for the 8th Congressional District seat. The deadline to register to vote in that election is Monday May 19.
