Four Mile Run Park Cleanup a Smashing Success

Volunteers haul approximately 2,000 pounds of trash out of Arlandria park.

Volunteers picked up approximately 2,000 pounds of trash in Four Mile Run Park on Saturday as part of a cleanup organized by Hume Springs resident Jacob Cuomo through Clean Virginia Waterways.

A team of volunteers filled an empty dumpster behind the Four Mile Run Park building with trash from the park, surrounding wetlands and in Four Mile Run itself.

“A special thanks to Del. Rob Krupicka (VA-45) and current Alexandria Vice Mayor Kerry Donley for taking time out of their busy schedules to come out this morning—I can vouch for both of these gentlemen—they returned to the community center looking very tired and dirty,” Cuomo wrote in an email.

A second Clean Virginia Waterways cleanup was also held Saturday at Monticello Park in North Ridge.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the cleanup!!! You make a difference by volunteering. When I was bicycling along Four Mile Run a month ago, just passing under the Route 1 bridge, I heard a flapping rustling sound in the water. I looked over and drifting under the route 1 underpass was a bird tangled up in a PLASTIC bag. I pulled off to see if I could help save it but it disappeared under the water engulfed in a bag. What a tragic site to see on a beautiful day. And I did not make this story up either! So thank you thank you for your time and energy, you may have saved an animal's life by your effort.

Eight of our middle school students from Teens Club (an after school program of Casa Chirilagua) participated in this cleanup. They gathered about 8 huge garbage bags full of trash- never once complaining. They had so much fun, they stayed an extra hour and wanted to do this next weekend! It was such a great experience seeing our students care about their community and serve in such a joyous way. I hope there are more of these events!
