Plaza dedicated in the name of a local iconic figure.

The 99-year-old Walter L. Mess whacked a large rock bearing a plaque with a bottle of champagne to officially dedicate a plaza in his name Sunday before dozens of onlookers on the Washington & Old Dominion Trail.

Congressman Jim Moran (D-Congress 8th District, Va.) joined Mayor and others in honoring Mess during the ceremony. Mess shared stories with the crowd and thanked everyone for showing up for the event.

“It all comes down to making people feel good,” Mess told the crowd inside the American Legion in the City of Falls Church.
