'Miracle on the Hudson' Plane to Travel through Virginia this Week

Plane destined for museum in Charlotte, N.C.

The “Miracle on the Hudson” plane will arrive at its final destination this week more than two years after it took off from a New York City airport.

The fuselage will be traveling through Virginia this week on the back of an oversized truck en route to a museum in Charlotte, N.C.

The plane left a warehouse in Northern New Jersey Saturday morning. By Sunday evening, the plane was southwest of Philadelphia and would cross the Deleware River Monday morning. The plane was traveling this weekend mostly on side streets because the craft was too large to fit through many tunnels in New Jersey. At many points, streetlights and traffic signals have had to be moved out of the way for the plane to proceed.

J. Supor & Son, the Harrison, N.J.-based industrial transport company moving the aircraft, has not released the plane’s planned route for security reasons, but you can follow the plane’s progress on www.jsupor.com or through Google Latitude apps for iPhone and Android phones.

US Airways flight 1549 hit a flock of geese just minutes after takeoff from La Guardia airport on January 15, 2009. The geese knocked out thrust from both engines of the Airbus A320-214. Unable to safely reach an airport for an emergency landing, Pilot Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey B. Skiles successfully ditched the plane in the Hudson River and evacuated all 150 passengers onto the wings of the plane, where they were rescued.

The tail section of the plane and wings are already at the Carolina's Aviation Museum. Those pieces will be reattached to the plane by US Airways and Airbus mechanics after it arrives.

The fuselage has an entourage, including police cars and film crews, traveling with it. J. Supor & Son is reportedly moving the plane free of charge.
