National Weather Service Issues Flood Watch for Fairfax County for Tuesday

Forecast calls for 1 to 2 inches of rain Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Fairfax County for Tuesday afternoon and evening. The forecast is calling for a 100 percent chance of rain with an expected 1 to 2 inches of rainfall Tuesday.

The Capital Weather Gang predicts a dry morning commute with possible sleet or a wintry mix starting before turning to rain. The heaviest rain is expected in the afternoon and evening.

Wednesday will be partly cloudy and warm with a high of 58 degrees.

flood watch or flash flood watch means there is a possibility of flooding or a flash flood in your area. A flash flood warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.

Some tips from Fairfax County include:

  • If it has been raining hard for several hours or if it has been raining steadily for days there may be the potential for flooding. Use common sense and available information. If water is rising quickly or you see a moving wall of mud or debris, immediately move to higher ground.
  • Stay out of flood waters, if possible. The water may be contaminated or electrically charged. However, should you find yourself trapped in your vehicle in rising water get out immediately and seek higher ground.
  • Stay away from downed power lines to avoid the risk of electric shock or electrocution.
