WEATHER ALERT for Northern Virginia

Thunderstorms and heavy rains moving in on Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Northern Virginia, along with parts of neighboring Maryland and the District of Columbia.

The watch includes the entire Northern Virginia region.

The watch runs from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon as forecasts call for periods of heavy rain Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. Two to 3 inches of rainfall is expected, with higher amounts possible in some of the watch area.

Flash flooding is also possible, especially along small rivers and streams. 

Relief arrives on Saturday, with clear skies and cooler temperatures. The weather service says the weekend should be mostly sunny with highs in the low 70s.
