Bad Hair Day Takes Stage at Concert in the Park

Free summer concert series continues on in Cherry Hill Park.

Those same Beetles summer anthems had kids young and old dancing in Cherry Hill Park, as Bad Hair Day brought in the fourth week on a cool summer night in the City of Falls Church.

“A lot of people ask me how do you select the bands to perform,” said Gordon Theisz, host of the 2011 VPIS Concert Series. “If the little kids are up here dancing that’s a good band.”

Kids danced in front of stage as their parents watched from blankets and chairs, occasionally rushing in to pull them away if they were too close to the stage.

Mayor Nader Baroukh made an apparence to see brothers John and Andrew Ratliff who have been the core of the band for more than 25 years. Barry Gruver, whose also sang in Fuzzy Logic and Switchback was the  lead on vocals and special guest, Matt Aukofer also a member of Fuzzy Logic, Mockingbirds was on bass.

The quartet performed hits by modern and classic bands spanning back as far as the 50s, including Steely Dan and Stealer’s Whale’s famous “Stuck in the Middle With You”, which was a crowd favorite of the night.  The Beatles were a hit with the kids especially though.

Proceeds from the sale of refreshments at the concerts go towards paying the bands to perform.

The Victorian Society’s ice cream flavor of the week was chocolate marshmallow, to go with Falls Church Arts running their weekly vendor area.

All performing bands for the 19th annual summer concert series have local ties to the city of Falls Church.

Theisz reminded the crowd that soul band “Chronic Funk Disorder” would be performing next week and of course threw in his weekly reminder to join the VPIS.
