The Drepung Monestary was founded in 1416 in Tibet and until 1959 it housed 10,000 monks. After the Communist China invasion of Tibet, the Dalai Lama was forced to flee. Sixty-two Gomang monks that survived the ordeal were given 42 acres of land in Mundgod, south India where they started to rebuild Drepung Gomang Monastic Dratsang. Today approximately 2,000 monks live on these few acres.
