Construction Mishap Cuts Verizon Phone, Internet Service in Merrifield

Repairs could take days to complete.

An overnight construction mishap has left more than 1,000 Verizon landline customers in the Merrifield area without service today.

Harry Mitchell, a spokesman for Verizon, said contractors doing construction work near the intersection of Lee Highway and Gallows Road damaged three Verizon communications cables and the underground ducts they were in. Mitchell said there is no timeline for when landline and Internet customers will have their services restored. He said the process could take days to repair completely.

FiOS service, Mitchell said, was not affected.

Customers whose service is affected may reach Verizon at 800-VERIZON (800-837-4966) or www.verizon.com/support for updates.

Yeah, I got a bullcrap pro-forma e-mail about calling their 800 number. No personal service involved. They didn't even read my e-mail saying I had already visited their website. My voicemail light has been flashing since I got home Friday night, but no dial tone. I say we all change our home phone service and send a clear message to these non-communicators....

I waited a long time on the 800 number to hear someone read a script to me which said that the problem should be resolved by "later tonight." I will give them 24 hours before bugging them again. Sounds to me like a company that hides behind its technological barriers and ignores customers. I'm researching alternative phone services tomorrow.

Called their "cust service line"<smile> said service expected by 9pm. Personally I think it was a planned outage. Similar think happened a while back... no service for 4 to 5 days. This kinda crap should b investigated.

NEVER thought I would say this... Cox Cable is better than Verizon. There I said it... No longer will I recommend Verizon to friends or associates moving into area.

Credit where credits due... Drove by the area early last week where the reported phone cables were damaged, sure enough Verizon crew was working on repairs and i'm told had been since the problem was reported that Friday. From what I saw where they were working on Gallows Rd., very close to Lee Hgwy intersection (near an existing Verizon facility as well), it was difficult and tight conditions in a heavy traffic area. Whatever happened there that weekend, Verizon repair techs were working to get it resolved early on. Dangerous conditions to work in, and have to give them the benefit of my earlier doubt. Thanks for getting fixed, had service back last Wed. afternoon where I live... Verizon please try to make sure that construction mishaps don't continue to happen there, still alot of road and construction work going on in that corridor, and thanks to the repair crews.
