Five Things You Need to Know Today: Dec. 9

  1. The deadline for the stormwater survey mailed to every City single-family home has been extended to Dec. 20. Instructions for completing the paper or online versions of the survey are included in the mailing. Respondents will need the individual Real Property Code provided in the letter in order to complete either version of the survey.
  2. Volunteers are needed to participate in an after-school program created by the Falls Church City Alliance for Youth in partnership with the Northern Virginia Family Service. The 1-2-1 Mentoring Program, is seeking volunteers to serve as role models who provide youth with support, encouragement and friendship. There are ten youths currently waiting for mentors. The youth in need are males and females in grades 5 through 7. The program runs year-round, once a week on Thursdays from 4:20 to 6 p.m. at the Falls Church Community Center, 223 Little Falls Street, Falls Church, VA 22046. Volunteer mentors should be 21 years old and above and be able to volunteer for a minimum of one calendar year. They will receive thorough training.   3. On this day in 1941, the U.S. military completed their first bombing mission of World War II taking out targets in Far East, Luzon, Philippines.
  4. On this day in 1953, General Electric announced all Communist employees will be fired.
  5. If today is your birthday, you share it with Olympic gold medal wrestler Kurt Angle (43-years-old) and Hall of Fame football player Dick Butkus (69-years-old). Happy birthday!
