Five Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 12

It's Wednesday!

  1. Voter registration books in the City of Falls Church will close Monday, Oct. 17. Registration applications will be accepted if they are received by the Office of Voter Registration & Elections or postmarked by Oct. 17.  Citizens who need to register to vote or update their registration address must do so by that date in order to be eligible to vote in the November election. All citizens who will be 18 years old on or before Tuesday, Nov. 8, are eligible to register and vote in this election.  Applicants may download an application to register at www.fallschurchva.gov/vote or visit the Office of Voter Registration & Elections at 300 Park Ave.  For more information call 703-248-5085.
  2. The City of Falls Church will host a community meeting on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Fellowship Hall of Columbia Baptist Church (103 W. Columbia St.). The North Washington Street Small Area Plan will be discussed, including existing plans and proposed redevelopment. Small discussion groups will form so attendees may share ideas.
  3. On this day in 1972, 46 U.S. sailors were injured in a race riot on the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk.
  4. On this day in 2000, the USS Cole was bombed in the port of Aden, Yemen, killing 17 sailors.
  5. If today is your birthday, you share it with comedian and activist Dick Gregory (79-years-old) and TV star Kirk Cameron (41-years-old). Happy birthday!
