Five Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 6

One more day until the weekend is here

  1. Farm Day takes place Saturday, Oct. 8, in Cherry Hill Park. The event features blacksmith demonstrations, horse-drawn hayrides, pumpkin painting, scarecrow making, and a petting zoo. Children can learn basic farming skills such as corn-shelling, beekeeping, and apple butter making. Tours of the historic Cherry Hill Farmhouse and barn are also offered.
  2. The City of Falls Church Department of Recreation and Parks calls "last chance" on the Fishing adventure for children ages 8 and up! Enjoy this Sunday, Oct. 9, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., with Virginia Fishing Adventures Fishing Camp! Participants in this private farm pond fishing trip will fish for bass and sunfish.
  3. On this day in 1979, Pope John Paul II becomes first Pope to visit the White House.
  4. On this day in 2000, Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic resigns.
  5. If today is your birthday, you share it with actress Elisabeth Shue (48-years-old) and actress Carole Lombard (103-years-old). Happy birthday!
