Five Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 7

It's Friday, see what's going on this weekend

  1. Here are your Falls Church high school football lineups for today: George Mason at Strassburg, 7:30 p.m.
  2. The City of Falls Church Department of Recreation and Parks calls "last chance" on the Fishing adventure for children ages 8 and up! Enjoy this Sunday, Oct. 9, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., with Virginia Fishing Adventures Fishing Camp! Participants in this private farm pond fishing trip will fish for bass and sunfish.
  3. Starting today, Giant shoppers can accrue A+ School Rewards every time they use their Giant card through March 29, 2012. A+ School Rewards provides a simple way for schools throughout the region to earn funds every time customers make a purchase using their Giant card at checkout. This year, shoppers can earn even more rewards by purchasing bonus products - double points with the purchase of specially marked items throughout the store and triple points with the purchase of products labeled with Giant’s exclusive Healthy Ideas icon. To participate during the 2011-2012 school year, Giant customers are encouraged to sign up in-store or online at www.giantfood.com/aplusprior prior to Oct. 7 and to designate up to two local schools to benefit from their purchases.
  4. Farm Day takes place Saturday, Oct. 8, in Cherry Hill Park. The event features blacksmith demonstrations, horse-drawn hayrides, pumpkin painting, scarecrow making, and a petting zoo. Children can learn basic farming skills such as corn-shelling, beekeeping, and apple butter making. Tours of the historic Cherry Hill Farmhouse and barn are also offered
  5. If today is your birthday, you share it with celebrity judge Simon Cowell (52-years-old) and classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma (56-years-old). Happy birthday!
