Mason Softball Opens Summer League With Two Losses

The George Mason High summer league softball team started their season with losses in both games of a double-header.

The last time the George Mason High School Lady Mustangs softball team took the mound they suffered a 5-4 loss to William Monroe High in the Bull Run District quarterfinal.

Head Coach Brian Fowler said that’s something he doesn’t want to experience again.

On Wednesday, the Lady Mustangs were back at it against the Mount Vernon Magic in their first season participating in the Fairfax Youth Fastpitch Association league. The Lady Mustangs lost 6-0 and 4-0 in the double-header at home.

Fowler, who is entering his second season as the head coach of the varsity team, said his team is looking to build on their 9-11 season by playing this summer, something never done at Mason before.

“It keeps the girls active and in touch with the sport since they don’t have many other alternatives to play over the summer,” Fowler said. “This is how we keep the girls active and better.”

Fowler said the teams in the league have experienced players, which he believes will help his young team improve before next season. He said his summer league team, a mix of varsity and junior varsity players, should take this experience into their next season and compete in the Bull Run District.

“I want us to be better,” Fowler said.
