NWS: Heat Index Will Make Temperatures Feel Like They’re Around 100 Degrees in NOVA

Heat index will make temperatures feel hotter than they really are over the next three days.

National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Lasorsa summed up Wednesday’s weather in Northern Virginia in five words: “It’s going to be hot.”

Lasorsa said temperatures will be in the mid 90s today but with the heat index, especially between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., it will feel like it’s a little more than 100 degrees. He said temperatures Thursday and Friday will be in high 90s but the heat index will make it feel like it’s closer to 115 degrees.

“The warm front from the Midwest is shifting into the Mid-Atlantic region,” Lasorsa said.

Here are some tips to beat the heat from the American Red Cross:

  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids, but avoid drinks with alcohol and caffeine.
  • Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing.
  • Stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
  • Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors, and use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.

Don’t leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
