Tornado and Flash Flood Watches In Effect

Bands of heavy rain, wind and thunderstorms are expected through Monday night across much of the DC metro area.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for our area through 10 p.m. Monday and a flash flood watch through 6 p.m.

A tornado watch means conditions exist that could produce a tornado.

After heavy rainfall overnight and this morning, afternoon and evening showers Monday could produce up to three more inches of rain in the DC and Northern Virginia area, according to the National Weather Service.

"With the ground already saturated from previous rainfall, it will not take much rain to produce flash flooding of streams and low lying areas," according to the weather service.

Scattered thunderstorms may continue through the evening and overnight hours. Forecasters predict some clearing after midnight, but there is another chance of isolated thunderstorms Tuesday morning.

The weather system (which is bringing a warm front) will move out of the area by Tuesday afternoon, leaving behind sunny skies and a high in the mid-80s. Wednesday's temperatures could rise to near 90 degrees.
