Traffic Tangles This Week: 267 West Shuts Down

Total Closure of Westbound Dulles International Airport Access Highway Scheduled Tuesday

The westbound lanes of the Dulles International Airport Access Highway  will be closed overnight Tuesday from 10 p.m.- to 5 a.m. just past the W&OD Trail for Dulles Corridor Metrorail (Silver Line) construction work.

Westbound Access Road traffic will be diverted to the westbound Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) via a bus ramp exit prior to the work zone. Drivers will follow the toll lanes until being directed back on to the Access Road via another bus entrance ramp near Route 666 (Monroe Rd.). Drivers will not be required to pay any tolls while using the detour.

Additionally, the left lane of the westbound Toll Road also will be closed while this work is performed. Traffic will be able to use all remaining lanes of the Toll Road during these times.

Eastbound:  There will be 15-minute closures of the eastbound Dulles Access Highway from midnight to 4 a.m.

A single left lane closure also will take place also on these days, from 9 p.m. to 10 a.m.  The lane closure will occur between mile markers 8.6 and 8.8, approximately where the Access Road crosses over Difficult Run because utility crews will be installing duct banks. Traffic will be allowed to travel through the remaining open lanes; no detour is necessary.

Drivers should use extreme caution in these areas. Police will be on on site.

Overnight Lane Closures on Northbound I-495 (the Beltway) Continue

The three right lanes of northbound I-495 will close overnight  from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday for construction of the aerial bridges that will carry the Silver Line tracks over the Capital Beltway (I-495) at Route 123. In addition, the exit ramps from northbound I-495 to both northbound and southbound Route 123 will be closed.

Crews will begin to shut down some lanes as early as 9:30 p.m., as follows:  9:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. - Crews will begin tapering for the closing of the right lane on I-495 North about a half mile before the Route 7 exit. The exit ramps at Route 7 will not be affected by rail project construction closings.

10:30 p.m. - Crews will begin to close the second right lane near the Route 7 bridge, and the third lane will close prior to the Route 123 interchange. The ramps to/from Route 123 also will close at this time.

All lanes and exits to Route 123 will be reopened to thru traffic by 5 a.m. Northbound thru traffic will be allowed to use the single open lane. The three lanes will re-open north of the work area. Drivers should expect significant delays each night.

The closings of the exit ramps to northbound and southbound Route 123 will result in the following detour: To access Route 123 from the beltway, drivers will be directed to detour by continuing on the beltway north, exiting Georgetown Pike (Route 193), turning around at Georgetown Pike, then entering the southbound beltway. Drivers will be able to exit to both directions of Route 123 from the southbound beltway.

Crews are using a large horizontal crane (also known as a truss) to build the bridges over I-495.  Cars  cannot travel under active bridge construction for safety reasons.

Lane Shifts of Westbound Route 7 and Route 123,  Friday April 1

Overnight Friday - Saturday morning, crews will perform a slight lane shift of westbound Leesburg Pike (Route 7). This will move the three thru lanes slightly to the north (right) just past the Route 123 overpass, then back gradually to the left as traffic moves westward toward Westpark Drive.

Work will begin at 10:30 pm. Friday, when crews will close the right and center thru lanes of Route 7 between Route 123 and Westpark Drive. Traffic will be allowed to pass using the open left lane. When that section is complete, at approximately 2am., crews will close the left and center thru lanes, and allow traffic to move through the open right lane. All work is expected to complete by 7 a.m. Saturday.

Major Water Line Work to Leesburg Pike (Route 7) at Spring Hill Road Overnights through Saturday April 2

Crews are scheduled to continue installation of a major waterline at the intersection of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) and Spring Hill Road. This will require the closure of all lanes of northbound Spring Hill Road for a 150-foot stretch north of Route 7.

Traffic from Route 7 will be detoured to use Westpark Drive, to Greensboro Drive, to access Spring Hill Road. Southbound Spring Hill Road traffic wishing to access Route 7 will use the reverse of that route.

This work is expected to last through the overnight hours of Saturday, April 2, though closures will not be used if work completes before that date.
