What Lies Have Your Parents Told You?

Falls Church-based theatrical group answers that question in their original self-entitled play July 5-6.

Did your parents tell you Santa Claus was real when you were growing up?

The members of the Flying Muskrat Theatre Company recalled several lies they heard growing up and came up with the original piece, “Lies My Parents Told Me.” The Falls Church-based group opens the play along with “The Loveliest Afternoon of the Year” and “Sentiment” July 5-6 at the James Lee Community Center.

“Everyone in the company came together to create this one,” said company co-founder and Artistic Director, Brennan Jones.

The community center has provided the group a place to rehearse and perform, which has been much appreciated, Jones said. With performances scheduled through August before some of the members head off to college, Jones said the last two years have been great.

“Seeing it all come together and working with new people and building new relationships has been awesome,” he said.

This is the second year for the theatrical company. Jones, 17, along with Melanie Reuter and Ava Hockenberry founded the company in 2012 while they were all students at Falls Church High School. Even though the three founders are headed off to college, the 2013 graduates said they would continue operating the company from afar and still produce their summer performances.

“A bunch of us at Falls Church High School had a bunch of one acts that the school said we couldn’t do and we said yes we can,” Jones said. “We were told there were scheduling problems so we started the company.”

With a year under their belts, the company is looking forward to another successful year. Hockenberry, 18, said the experience of running a theatre company has been amazing.

“People are starting to know us, which is really cool,” she said.
