New Poll: McAuliffe Holds 7 Percent Lead in Virginia Governor's Race

Independent candidate Sarvis jumps to 11 percent. Election for next governor of Virginia is Nov. 5.

A new poll out Tuesday shows continued support for gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe, the Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia. The election is Nov. 5. The last day to register to vote is today (Tuesday, Oct. 15).

The Christopher Newport University Poll shows:
Terry McAuliffe (Democrat): 46 percent
Ken Cuccinelli (Republican): 39 percent
Sarvis (Independent): 11 percent

"Today's Christopher Newport University poll showed that Virginians continue to support Terry McAuliffe's mainstream focus on jobs and the economy over Ken Cuccinelli's focus on his own ideological agenda and alliance with the extreme Tea Party Republicans responsible for the government shutdown," said McAuliffe spokesperson Josh Schwerin in a statement released Tuesday.

"Terry's mainstream vision for growing Virginia's economy and creating jobs is increasingly bringing together Virginians of both parties in support of his campaign, while Ken Cuccinelli continues to alienate mainstream voters by focusing on his radical ideological agenda and aligning himself with the extreme Tea Party Republicans who forced the government shutdown," Schwerin said.

"Virginians aren't falling for Ken Cuccinelli's false and desperate attacks, and continue to show their support for Terry McAuliffe, a leader who will focus on education, transportation, and issues that will create more opportunities for all Virginians," he noted.

McAuliffe will campaign in Falls Church Saturday with Hillary Clinton.
