City of Fairfax Theatre Company Hosts Mini Workshops and Registration May 6 For Unique and Imaginative Summer Drama Camp

The City of Fairfax Theatre Company (CFTC) is excited to announce that it will host a registration event for its Summer Drama Camp on Tuesday, May 6, from 7-9 p.m. at Truro Anglican Church (10520 Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22030). The event will include mini dance workshops and improv theater games for the kids, as well as an opportunity for parents to meet and ask questions of staff.

"CFTC’s annual Summer Camp indulges the inherent creativity and imagination of each child through a unique experience where campers create their OWN theatrical performance,” said CFTC Creative Director and Music Director Kirsten Boyd.

CFTC’s Summer Drama Camp is run through Fairfax City Registration. In addition to attending the information session on May 6, interested campers may also enroll online by selecting “online registration” at www.fairfaxva.gov/parksrec.  Online enrollment is now open. Campers can enroll for just one session or receive a discount for enrolling in multiple sessions.  Discounts are also available for siblings enrolled in the same camp. CFTC’s Summer Camp is located at Lanier Middle School/Truro Church.

Boyd said CFTC prides itself on offering a camp where children learn acting, art, music, and dance from professional theatre artists through games, activities and lessons designed with a goal-oriented approach: the creation and production of a student-developed showcase.

“Each showcase is unique, as it features original student-created stories, music, lyrics, and designs brought to life on stage,” Boyd said.

CFTC’s summer camp is geared to creative, enthusiastic kids (ages 5-14) and will run in three 2-week sessions from July 7-August 15. Each session is offered for four age groups (5-7 years, 8-9 years, 10-11 years, and 12-14 years).  Parents and friends are invited to performances created by campers at the end of each session.

“Each two-week session of the camp has a different theme, so you can sign up your kids for the whole summer for one of the best deals in town,” said CFTC Board Chairperson Sharon Petersen.  “It is also one of the few camps that accommodate a wide age range in the same location at the same time.  This is a huge convenience for families of multiple children trying to coordinate pick-ups and drop offs.”

“But don’t let the bargain price tag fool you,” Petersen added. “CFTC’s summer camp professionals teach all of our campers -- young and old -- to exercise both sides of their brains as they expand their artistic talents while simultaneously developing critical thinking skills! The problem solving, set construction, and narratives the campers come up with are amazing.”
