Share Your Memories of Park Lover Walter Mess

The founder of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority passed away recently and will be honored at the annual W&OD Trail picnic.

Celebrate the life and times of Walter Mess, the founder of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, at the annual Friends of the W&OD Trail picnic.

Mess passed away May 26. During his more than 40 years on the NVRPA board, he helped preserve more than 10,000 acres of land.

And at the picnic, the first 100 visitors get a free “Walter L. Mess, Father of the W&OD” T-shirt.

The picnic will be held Saturday June 8 from noon until 4 p.m. at the American Legion Post 130 at 400 N. Oak St. in Falls Church. The American Legion building is located adjacent to mile marker 6 ½ on the W&OD Trail.

Items on the menu will include hot dogs, crab legs, coconut shrimp/shrimp cocktail, pulled pork BBQ, BBQ chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans, cookies, and assorted drinks including sodas, iced tea, lemonade and bottled water.

The picnic is also part of the group's annual meeting about the state of the W&OD Trail. Participants can learn more about the trail and the Friends of the W&OD volunteer group.
