Five Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 4

Christmas tree collection begins today.

  1. Parents, guardians, middle school and high school students, community members, and professionals who work with families are invited to attend the "Protecting Against the Realities of Substance Abuse" program at 7:50 p.m. at the auditorium. The forum is presented by Parents Reaching Out To Educate Communities Together (P.R.O.T.E.C.T.).
  2. Christmas trees are collected free of charge on Wednesdays in January and February. Place your Christmas tree at the curb after removing plastic bags, rope, and all decorations, including tinsel.
  3. On this day in 1904, Supreme Court rules Puerto Ricans cannot be denied admission to U.S.
  4. On this day in 2007, Nancy Pelosi is elected Speaker of the House, by a vote of 233-202.
  5. If today is your birthday, you share it with former NFL head coach Don Shula (82-years-old) and Maytag repairman actor Jesse White (95-years-old). Happy birthday!
