In Memoriam: Newsman Herb Kaplow, Falls Church Resident, Dies at Age 86

Longtime newsman Herb Kaplow, a resident of Falls Church, has died. Kaplow, 86, died Saturday of a stroke, according to The New York Times. News reports say he died at Arlington's Virginia Hospital Center.

Kaplow was a longtime Washington correspondent for NBC News and then ABC News, covering everything from presidential campaigns to foreign trips by President Richard Nixon to historic Supreme Court decisions.

One of the biggest stories of Kaplow's career included the first interview by an American journalist with Fidel Castro after the invasion of Cuba by American-backed Cuban exiles at the Bay of Pigs in April 1961, the Times noted. Kaplow was in China during Nixon's historic visit there in 1972 and he was also with then-Vice President Nixon when he was pelted by crowds during a trip to Venezuela in 1958, the newspaper noted.

He retired from the news business in 1994, according to the Times story.

Kaplow is survived by his wife, the former Betty Rae Koplow; his sons Steven, Bobby and Larry; his sister, Naomi Michael; and six grandchildren. Also survived by Charlotte Kaplow, Kate Kaplow and Margaret Kaplow; grandchildren Alexandra, Sara and her husband Nicholas McClusky, Madeline, Maxwell, Molly and Sadie Lou. Herbert Kaplow was born in New York. He graduated from Flushing High School, Queens (NY) College and Northwestern University's Medill.
