Think You Can Burn it Off... Think Again!

I can't tell you how many people are seduced into thinking that they can burn-off excess calories. The question usually is "What is the best exercise to burn fat." The television ads are full of treadmills, cross trainers and other devices designed to help burn fat. So they say.

My answer is all exercises will burn fat but not enough to make a significant difference in your weight. With that answer either someone looks at me in disbelief or they turn and walk away.

The truth is that with the average workout burning about 250 to 300 calories, it takes about 3 to 4 hours of activity to burn a 1000 calories.

And you know how easy it is to eat 1000 extra calories. One extra sticky bun here or several beers over the weekend there. Not hard at all. And these extra calories are consumed in much less time than 3 to 4 hours a day
it takes to get rid of them.

So what is the real solution to healthy weight loss? Portion control, preferably without calories counting, is the only real way to get to a healthy weight.

Sure you exercise regularly to improve your health, longevity and quality of life; but not to reduce the size of your waist line. Think it through and you will see how the only strategy that makes sense is to learn portion control.
