Despite the rain, many dedicated bicyclists participated in Bike to Work Day at the Merrifield W&OD Trail Pit Stop, sponsored by the 495 Express Lanes on May 16. Affiliated with Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, Bike to Work Day is an event that supports the area’s bike commuters and promotes Virginia’s overall mission for sustainable transportation.
Area bicyclists who stopped by the Merrifield W&OD Trail Pit Stop enjoyed free refreshments, bike tune ups and giveaways from local Merrifield businesses including Gold’s Gym, Einstein Bagels, Velocity 5, Panda Express and Performance Bicycle.
The Greater Merrifield Business Association was also in attendance at the event, cheering on the riders as they showed their support for alternative transportation methods – like biking – in northern Virginia. Bicyclists also stopped by the pit stop to learn about the 495 Express Lanes for the days when they drive – instead of bike – to work.
