Falls Church Man Killed in Vehicle Versus Pedestrian Accident

Alcohol and speed were not a factor in the accident in the 5800 block of Leesburg Pike in Bailey's Crossroads.

Fairfax County Police are investigating an accident that left a 54-year-old Falls Church man dead Thursday night.

Around 10:50 p.m., a vehicle hit Herman Bartlett as he walked across the street in the 5800 block of Leesburg Pike. Lucy Caldwell, a police spokeswoman said Bartlett was rushed to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Caldwell said the driver of the car stayed at the scene and no charged are pending. She also said speed and alcohol were not a factor.

The accident comes as the Fairfax County Police Department begins their annual pedestrian safety enforcement and springtime education initiatives.

Caldwell said the number of citations written for pedestrian-related violations has increased 173 percent from 213 in 2010 to 582 in 2012.

County police will step up their enforcement and education efforts throughout the area. On Saturday, the McLean District will focus their efforts again near the Dunn Loring Metro Station and the West Falls Church Station. Caldwell said officers will monitor crosswalks, post electronic signboards and enforce pedestrian and motorists traffic laws.

In March, Ai Ying Zhu, 53, of Falls Church was hit by a car and killed as she crossed Gallows Road near the Dunn Loring Metro Station. Police continue investigating the accident.
