The Fairfax County Police Department has identified the man who died in a 15-foot trench in McLean on Tuesday as 36-year-old Juan Francisco Cerna Alfaro of Falls Church.

Alfaro and other construction workers were digging a trench beside a vacant home in Kinglet Court on Tuesday when police believe the dirt collapsed, burying and killing him.

As of Tuesday, police were not investigating the incident as a criminal matter. That hasn't changed, police spokesman Bud Walker told Patch.

Walker declined to offer any new information on the incident.

"Anything else would be subject to the investigation," he said.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue workers spent hours Tuesday removing dirt and shoring up the walls of the trench to recover the man.
