Police Looking for Man Who Stole Credit Cards From Cancer Patients

Police are looking for a person passing as a maintenance man who they believe is stealing purses and wallets from cancer and rehabilitation patients.

Fairfax County police have received at least seven complaints of wallets and purses stolen from various doctors' offices since late June. The latest of the string of thefts happened Sept. 20 in Falls Church in the 8000 block of Arlington Blvd., according to Fairfax County Police Public Information Officer Lucy Caldwell. According to police, the male victim placed his belongings into a cubby and when he returned, his wallet was gone.

“People who have routine appointments in that area, just to be sure you haven’t been victimized, keep a check on your bank accounts,” Caldwell said. “There’s nothing to say that it’s not happening in other areas.”

Caldwell said there have been four thefts in the 8000 block of Arlington Blvd. and three in the 8000 block of Leesburg Pike. It’s possible there could be other areas hit but not reported yet, she said.

In the latest case, police said a man was allegedly seen walking around looking at vents and acting like he was on a maintenance call. Caldwell said police believe this man may be linked to the other cases.

Caldwell said the man is believed to be in his late 20’s and was last seen wearing blue work pants, a blue shirt and a neon green traffic vest. Police believe the alleged suspect has been using the credit cards stolen from the wallets and purses at gas stations in the Washington, D.C. area.
