Sept. 11: The Day That Changed Policing

City of Falls Church police have changed their training to now include counter-terrorism.

Before 9-11, City of Falls Church police officers were used to carrying a medical kit, rain gear and a personal bag in the trunks of their police cruisers. Now, they also carry a bag that holds a gas mask, a nuclear biological chemical suit, a hydration system and tape to seal the edges of their suits. Capt. Rick Campbell said gas masks were only issued to police officers who were responding riots or protests. Now, he said, the “essential bags” are issued to each officer at the completion of the training academy as well as those already on the force. Campbell, a 30-year veteran, said about 30 percent of the classes taught in post-Sept. 11 police academy classes are on terrorism.
