St. Patrick’s Day Police Checkpoints set in Falls Church

Police will be out monitoring possible drunken motorists, pedestrians.

Saint Patrick’s Day is Sunday, and Falls Church police will be watching out for those who may have had too much to drink.

The department is working with the Washington Regional Alcohol Program to bolster awareness about the SoberRide program. Information about the SoberRide program has been posted throughout the city and electronic message boards along Broad Street. Amy Betor, spokeswoman for the city, said there is usually an additional police officer on patrol to help spot possible motorists under the influence.

In 2012, Falls Church police responded to seven alcohol-related incidents that may have been related to Saint Patrick’s Day festivities, Betor said.

“The police department also works to ensure that the servers are watching for illegal underage purchases and/or preventing over serving patrons who might have had too much to drink,” Betor said. “They will be providing extra checks at locations that have traditionally been busy with a heavy customer base.  These extra checks are to ensure safety and prevention of any alcohol-related incidents that may be preventable.”
