Victim in Falls Church Fire Still Not Identified

Firefighters still investigating cause of the blaze.

Kirsten Apple was thankful an early morning Monday fire in the 6600 block of Orland St. in Falls Church didn’t spread from her neighbor’s home to hers.

As flames destroyed her neighbor’s home, killing someone inside, Apple and her children watched from across the street at another neighbor’s home.

“My neighbor across the street came and knocked on my door and woke me up,” Apple said. “I grabbed my two kids and ran out barefoot.”

Wednesday morning, Dan Schmidt, a spokesman for Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, said they still have not identified the person killed in the fire and they are still investigating the cause.

Firefighters arrived to the blaze at about 4:10 a.m. The second floor of the home completely collapsed and firefighters found the body hours after the raging fire was under control.

Apple said he has not heard from a man that lived at the home since the fire destroyed the two-story Cape Cod style.

Schmidt said the department would not release the victim's identity until next of kin are notified.
