Abortion Ultrasound Bill Passes Virginia Senate

Two similar House bills awaiting votes in Courts of Justice Committee.

A bill requiring the use of prior to an abortion passed the Virginia Senate, according to Capital News Service.

Senate Bill 484 passed with a 21-18 vote Wednesday, according to CNS. Sen. Jill Holtzman Vogel (R-Winchester) sponsored the bill.

According to CNS, two Republican backed bills were introduced in the House of Delegates that would have mandated ultrasound testing before abortions. House Bill 261, filed by Del. Mark Cole from Fredericksburg, would require ultrasound testing at least 48 hours before the abortion is performed. HB 462, filed by Del. Kathy Byron from Lynchburg proposes that fetal ultrasound imaging be done at least two hours before an abortion. In addition, the sound of the fetus’s heart would be examined in another effort to determine the gestational age of the fetus, according to CNS.
