Falls Church City Elections Will Move to November in 2013

Residents vote yes on referendum that will change voting to November.

Mayor Nader Baroukh was glad City of Falls Church residents were able to vote on a referendum that would move city elections from May to November.

With 1738 votes, the referendum was passed. The referendum won’t go into effect until November 2013. There will still be one last city election in May 2012.

“I’m glad this was an issue that was put to the voters,” Baroukh said.

David Bjerke, general registrar for the City of Falls Church, said the election process will change following the May elections. The referendum must now be approved by the general assembly.

With the referendum passed, Baroukh said the city can now focus on other pressing issues. He said the May elections allowed things that made the City of Falls Church elections special.

“It allowed us to focus on more local issues,” Baroukh said.

When she arrived to the city in 1977, Barb Cram thought the referendum was a good thing. She said a two party system has a purpose.

“I’m sure it could go either way and work or not, but it depends on who is looking at it,” she said.
