Falls Church, Fairfax County Schools Closed Wednesday

Snow accumulation predictions increased overnight.

Falls Church could see 6 - 12 inches of snow before this storm is over late Wednesday, forecasters predict (an increase from earlier forecasts of 3 - 8 inches). 

The entire metropolitan area is under a winter storm warning through 3 a.m. Thursday morning.

The storm system moved into the area later than initially forecast Tuesday; snow to started after midnight Wednesday.

Winds of up to 25 miles per hour, with gusts up to 35 miles per hour, are also possible.

Operating Status: Schools, Government

  • Falls Church City Public Schools and Fairfax County Public Schools are closed today for students and staff.  Falls Church City Public Schools day care is closed.
  • The Office of Personnel Management announced the federal government is closed today, but telework and emergency employees should follow their agency's guidelines.

The following applies to the City of Falls Church

  • Falls Church City Public Schools: CLOSED
  • GOVERNMENT STATUS: CLOSED

  • COURTS CLOSED: Falls Church District Courts Combined CLOSED today.

  • TRASH/RECYCLING RESCHEDULED: Trash, recycling, yard waste, and special collections are rescheduled for Saturday, March 9. Please remove carts from the road so city crews can safely plow our streets. Return carts to the road after 5 p.m. on Friday or prior to 7 a.m. on Saturday. We apologize for the inconvenience.

  • COMMUNITY CENTER: All classes and activities canceled. Community Center OPEN regular hours, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

  • LIBRARY: Plan to open for regular Wednesday hours, 1 a.m. to 9 p.m.

  • MEETINGS: Rec & Parks Advisory Board, Electoral Board meetings both CANCELED.

  • EMPLOYEES: Liberal leave (inform your supervisor), emergency personnel report. Keep checking back here for updates.

The following applies to Fairfax County:

  • Trash and recycling collection is canceled Wednesday. 
  • Fairfax County Government offices are open today, Wednesday, March 6, however employees have been granted unscheduled leave. Emergency service personnel should report as scheduled.
  • The Fairfax County Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed today.
