Moran Delivers Spirited Speech at Falls Church Business Luncheon

Congressman asks business leaders how he, government could help small businesses.

Congressman Jim Moran (D-Congress 8th District, Va.) was the keynote speaker at Tuesday’s luncheon, but he wanted to listen more than be heard.

Moran asked the crowd at the what he and the rest of the government could do to help small businesses? He told the business leaders that high taxes aren’t the reason behind the tough economy.

“The basic problem is employers aren’t hiring because people aren’t buying,” Moran said.

For more than a half hour, Moran fielded questions from those in attendance while also giving spirited answers about topics ranging from Occupy Wall Street protesters and the economic state of Northern Virginia. Moran said it was important to hear what the public had to say about the economy. Moran said the protesters are exercising their democratic rights and they’re getting younger people involved in what’s going on in the country.

As people asked Moran about the economy, he was steadfast to inform the room that the economy in Northern Virginia is better off than in most places and in fact, is the strongest economy in the country.

“And in fact, it’s the best place to live and the statistics will tell you that,” Moran said.

Chamber Chair Michael Ankuma said Moran’s presentation was well received and intriguing. He said it was good that Moran took questions from the people he’s serving.

“I think his presentation was realistic and passionate,” Ankuma said. “I didn’t hear much about solutions but he did the best he could to answer all the questions.”
