Proposed FY 2013 Budget Big Topic at Weekend Town Hall Meeting

City manager to discuss proposed $69 million budget during Saturday's meeting.

It’s budget season and Falls Church City Manager Wyatt Shields has proposed a $69 million budget for fiscal year 2013. The proposed budget includes a 6.7 increase from the current budget but no increase in taxes.

Shields will hear what the public has to say about the budget Saturday during the first town hall meeting at 10 a.m. in the .

“With the strong actions taken by the city council and management in response to financial challenges over the past several years,” Shields said in a statement. “The city is in a stronger financial position to apply resources toward key initiatives and needs.”

During Monday’s city council meeting, Shields submitted his proposed budget and the Five-Year Capital Improvements Program (CIP). Council will adopt a final budget on April 23 after three public hearings and two town hall meetings. The 2013 fiscal year runs from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013.

Shield’s proposed FY 13’ budget fully funds Falls Church City Public Schools request of $29.9 million, an increase of 7.3 percent from FY 12’. The proposed budget also maintains the real estate tax rate at $1.27 per $100 of assessed value and increases sewer fees by nine percent, a recommendation in the city’s 2011 sewer rate study, according to a release. The proposed budget also calls for an increase in employee salaries, for the first time since 2009. The increase comes after three years of no pay increase and two years of decreased take-home pay.
