WEEK IN REVIEW: Hilton Garden Inn a Step Closer to Joining Falls Church Skyline

Busy week at Mount Daniel Elementary after two utility lines break in one day.

Before long, a new six-story hotel will join the skyline along West Broad Street in Falls Church.

Last week, the developers of the project and city officials broke ground at the future location of a Hilton Garden Inn that’s expected to open early 2014.

The biggest talker of the week, however, was the estimated $550 million jackpot in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing. Unfortunately, no winning ticket was sold in Falls Church this time. The closest winning ticket, worth $1 million, was sold in Arlington.

Mount Daniel Elementary had a very rough Thursday having a water main break, causing the school to dismiss at 10:30 a.m. Later in the day, while crews worked to repair the break, they accidentally cut an adjacent gas line. All is well at the school now and no one was injured.

As Falls Church Water customers wait to see if a referendum vote in November 2013 will see the utility company sold to Fairfax Water, some customers are hopeful that the service will be sold and charges will decrease. The deal between the two water utility services calls for the system to be sold for $40 million instead of the initial bid of $44 million. City officials believe the lower sale price is actually worth it.

Fairfax County police have found another skimmer device on the same ATM machine at Inova Fairfax Hospital they found one on over the summer. Police are urging people who may have used the ATM near the hospital’s gift shop to check their bank statements for any fraudulent charges.
