As Season Kicks Off, Mason Looks to Defend State Title

Girls basketball team faces Millbrook High, which boasts an 83 game win streak, on Friday.

The last time the George Mason High girls basketball team stepped on the court in March, they beat Gate City 50-47 for the Virginia High School League Group A Division 2 basketball championship.

Friday night, the Mustangs will take the court again for another season in which they'll look to defend their title, starting with Millbrook High, a team with an 83-game win streak and three Group AA championships of its own.

Head Coach LaBryan Thomas believes his team can compete against Millbrook if they play a complete game.

“They put a lot into it and they go after it for 32 minutes,” Thomas said of Millbrook’s team. “For our young guards, we’re going to have to play hard. We’ll have to play as a team.”

The game, part of the Battlefield High Tip Off, starts at 6:30 p.m.
