FCCPS Elementary School Awarded State Honor

Jefferson Elementary School named Title I Distinguished School

is the only school in the City of Falls Church to have the honor of being a Title I Distinguished School.

The honor, bestowed by the Virginia Board of Education, was announced Wednesday by Falls Church City Public Schools officials. Jefferson was among 103 schools in the commonwealth to receive the honor.

“The administration and staff at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School have worked diligently to identify students’ learning needs and to address them,” Falls Church City Public Schools Superintendent Lois Berlin said Wednesday in a news release.  “This recognition is well deserved.”

The honor is based on student achievement and assessments from the 2009-2010 academic year. The school had to maintain full state accreditation as outlined by Virginia’s Standards of Learning program for two years. The school also had to meet federal benchmarks in mathematics and reading and had to average scores in the 60th percentile or higher in the two subjects.
