FCCPS School Board Starts New School Year

The Tuesday night school board meeting included audit reports, future employee guidelines and more.

The Falls Church City Public School Board returned for their first public meeting of the 2011-12 school year Tuesday night.

The board discussed equal opportunity employment and listened to one woman in attendance voice her concern for the board’s consideration of the possibility of opening teacher and staff positions to the LBGT community.  Also discussed was the new "Grab and Go" breakfast program meant to help families get affordable meals for their children at area schools.

Dr. Toni Jones, the new superintendent, submitted the city's annual school report to the state government earlier in the day. She presided over the meeting as the board listened to the audited presentations of the major school board funds, including the audited School Board Activity Fund and unaudited School Operating Fund, Community Service Fund and the Food Service Fund.

The School Board Activity Fund, audited by the West Virginia based public accounting firm Brown, Edwards and Company, posted a net gain of more than $35,000. The fund is the total sum of collections for all student activities in the city.

The unofficial figures for the end of the fiscal year 2011 operating budget for FCCPS was a net gain of $330,000. The board attributed the positive financial activity to a number of higher than expected revenue items including student tuition, sales tax and vacant employee positions. The board starts the fiscal year 2012 with a balance of $2.8 million.
