Kane, Cheney Named First Team All-State

Cheney earns honor for second consecutive year.

Stephanie Cheney and Lauren Kane received the same congratulatory text message Saturday from girl’s head basketball coach LaBryan Thomas.

Neither of the girls knew they had earned first team All-State honors before receiving the text message.

“I was like ‘Really, no way’,” Kane said. “I was so excited.”

Kane and Cheney are the only two Lady Mustangs to earn Virginia High School Coaches Association single A All-State honors. The learned of the honor a week after beating Gate City for the Virginia High School League Group A Division 2 . Thomas was named single A Division 2 girl’s Coach of the Year by VHSCA last week as well.

This is the second year Cheney has earned the honor. The junior was also named Bull Run District Player of the Year for a second consecutive year as well. Cheney gave credit to her teammates for helping her earn the honors.

“This year I felt we were the closest,” Cheney said.

Kane is headed to Radford University in the fall but has not decided if she will walk onto the basketball team. The senior said she is enjoying the last two weeks and taking it all in.

“I’m just glad the team ended on a good note,” she said.
