Local Football Coaches Not Happy About Rain

No plans for make up games yet.

In the days of old, rain never affected football games to the point of cancelations.

In their win last weekend, University of Michigan had their game cut short against Western Michigan University because of heavy rain and lightning. West Virginia University beat Marshall University in a game that ended early in the fourth quarter also because of lightning.

And this week, Fairfax County Public Schools football games have been canceled Friday because of rain and flooding in the area.

“We will try everything possible to get the game in on Saturday,” said Head Football Coach William Lapthorn about the cancelation of their game against Mount Vernon High. “In the past, the reality has been to make up games on Monday night, then turn around and play again on Friday.  This is a tough scenario for the players especially.”

FCPS officials made the decision to close schools and cancel all extra curricular activities as well because of flooding and heavy rains in Fairfax County Thursday. FCPS spokeswoman Mary Shaw said there has been no decision on when games will be made up. , the only high school in Falls Church City Public Schools, is still planning on hosting their home opener against Luray High School Friday night.

Before the decision was made to cancel games on Thursday, ’s game against visiting Hayfield Secondary was moved to Wakefield High. The move was made because of field conditions on Stuart’s natural surface.

Roy Ferri, head football coach at Stuart said he’s not thrilled with the postponement but the extra rest is a good thing for some banged up starters.

“Our game plan for Hayfield has been in for three weeks, but what concerns me is the short turnaround time before we play Annandale,” Ferri said. “If we play Hayfield Monday night, then we'll only have a couple of practice days before playing Annandale on Friday. This isn't baseball, where you can play games every couple of days.”
