Mason Ready For Bull Run Foe Clarke County

Mustangs beat Eagles in three of last season's five matchups

The George Mason Mustangs didn’t face anyone more last season than their Bull Run District foes Clarke County High.

In the five meetings between the schools, the Mustangs won three including a 53-44 win in the Bull Run District title game and a 43-30 win in the Region B semifinals. Mason head basketball coach Chris Capannola said the Eagles are his team’s biggest rivals and their matchups are always tough and physical.

“They always get up for us and we always get up for them,” Capannola said Wednesday.

Thursday will mark the first meeting between the two teams this season when the Mustangs host the Eagles at 7:45 p.m. in the Mary Ellen Henderson gym. Both teams enter the game with similar records (Mason at 3-2 and Clarke County at 3-3) but Clarke County is coming off of a win while the Mustangs are coming off of a 57-53 loss to Madison County Tuesday.

Capannola said he doesn’t have to say much to his team about how important this game is especially coming off of a loss.

“I think we’re going to come out strong on defense,” Capannola said. “I’m ready to get back at it.”

Senior forward Dimitri Venets said he is excited to face off against the Eagles. Last season Venets played more of a reserve role for the Mustangs but this season he has been pushed into a more pivotal position.

“I’m too hyped especially after that loss Tuesday,” Venets said. “We have to get some revenge on somebody.”
