Mason’s Boys and Girls Hoops Teams Lose in Regional Championship

Both teams will still play in the VHSL state tournament.

HARRISONBURG – The boys and girl’s basketball teams from suffered heartbreaking losses in the Virginia High School League Region B Division II championship games Saturday.

The boys took the court at Eastern Mennonite University first against undefeated Dan River, taking the game to overtime where they loss 67-60. The girls fell apart in the third quarter in a 51-39 loss to Stuart Draft.

Both teams have a week before they play Saturday. The boys will play Essex High and the girls will play Sussex High. Sites and times will be announced early in the week.

The boys came out firing against the undefeated (22-0) Wildcats, taking an early 19-15 lead in the first quarter. The Mustangs found themselves down 29-27 at the half before Dan River took a larger lead in the third quarter. The Mustangs tied the game in regulation before Dan River turned up the heat in the extra period.

“We played very well but they had more athletes and we missed too many free throws,” said Head Coach Chris Capannola. “It was a good high school basketball game.”

The girls also got an early lead in their game going up 13-9 in the first quarter and taking a 23-19 lead into the half. Stuart Draft came out in the third quarter on fire going on a 4-0 run to end the period. Stuart Draft then went on a 8-0 run early in the final period, holding the Lady Mustangs to 11 fourth quarter points.

“They stuck to their game plan and slowed us down,” said Head Coach LaBryan Thomas.

FREE THROWS

Nate Ogle led the Mustangs in scoring with 17-points on the night. Fellow senior Philippe Griffiths dropped 14-points. Griffiths said the Mustangs played their game but didn’t execute down the stretch. Noel Obusan scored 10-points and junior Will Nunley scored 9-points.

For the Lady Mustangs, Stephanie Cheney scored 16-points and senior Lauren Kane added 14-points. Ashley Alexander scored four in the game and senior Leah Roth added 3-points.
