Mason Volleyball Eyeing First District Championship

Mustangs are one win away from their first Bull Run District Championship in volleyball.

The George Mason High volleyball team moved a step closer to a Bull Run District championship after sweeping Manassas Park High in three sets Tuesday.

With a win on the road over district foe Clarke County High on Thursday, the Mustangs (12-3 overall, 11-2 in district) can hang their first volleyball championship banner in the gym.

“We’re playing for out first district championship Thursday,” said Head Coach Erik Healey. “If we beat Clarke, we’ll have our first district championship in school history.”

The Mustangs beat visiting Manassas Park in three sets (25-9; 25-10 and 25-16) on senior night. Senior co-captain Maddie Johnson led Mason with 18 assists, 11 kills and six digs while junior co-captain Sally Karstens had 12 kills and seven aces.

Healey said it will be tough replacing his senior class next season, especially Johnson. The cohesiveness the senior group added will be missed the most, he said.

Johnson, a four-year varsity volleyball player at Mason, said she was used to being the one to plan senior night but having someone else plan the last game before the home fans.

“It was exciting and emotional for me,” Johnson said.
